Brace up for summers
The harsh summer is here - and no matter how much we try, the heat gets to us. The dry, sweaty weather makes us dull and tired.
Fatigued
Summer is also the time when we feel too fatigued to do anything and all we want to do is keep the AC on and sleep. However, here are some foods that will help you fight the fatigue.
Increase your Hemoglobin
Most of the fatigue we feel in summers is not due to the heat, but due to the low levels of HB that seems to dip further in summers. Here are foods that will increase both your HB and your endurance levels.
Egg yolk
Egg yolk is an excellent source of iron and helps in building immunity. Have them in moderation in summers though.
Lemtils
Lentils too are an excellent source of both protein and iron and keeps you full for a long time, thus preventing chances of a heat-stroke.
Fresh fruits
All fresh fruits contain iron absorbing minerals that build immunity. They also are an excellent source of water and keep you hydrated.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms are rich in copper and helps in release of iron stored in the liver, that ends up in building haemoglobin.
Nuts
Nuts, particularly pistachios, peanuts and cashews are a good sources of iron. Eat them in moderation though - they tend to build up heat in the body.
Pumpkin seeds
They are an excellent snack and a good source of iron. Soak them, grind them and use the paste in your regular food.
Honey
Honey directly builds haemoglobin in the body since it contains iron, copper and manganese. Add them to your shakes and smoothies.
Water
No points for guessing why you need to tank up on water in summers - at least 10-12 glasses is a must. For extra freshness, add a slice of lemon in the water.
Oatmeal
One of the best breakfast options, Oatmeal is full of proteins that keep you full for longer --- it also helps you keep your stomach stable during a heat stroke.
Spinach
This green leafy vegetable is rich in iron, magnesium and potassium. Don't like it as a vegetable? Top it up on salads, sandwiches or even try it as a cold soup.
Buttermilk
The good old chaach is the perfect remedy to cool you down. Simply add some seasoning and have it multiple times a day - you will never catch a heat stroke (go easy on the salt though.)
Lemon juice
The nimbu paani is an eternal favourite and apart from keeping you hydrated, the Vitamin C in the lemon also prevents muscle cramps.
Sweet potatoes
Carbs in moderation are necessary to build up immunity and sweet potatoes are an excellent source. Have them roasted or made into a vegetable.
Kiwi
Kiwi is such a versatile fruit - it can be had as an icecream, smoothie or can even be made into a scrumptious salad. An average of one Kiwi per day will give you a healthy dosage of Vitamin C.
Kidney Beans
Kidney beans give you instant energy since they contain iron and fibre. They are also relatively calorie free and if rajma chawal is too much to digest in summers have them as a salad or as a taco filling.
Don't diet
Our average consumption of food naturally goes down in summers, so dieting can make it worse. Instead, concentrate on avoiding anything that is oily and greasy.
Avoid tea and coffee
Too much of these beverages block cells from absorbing iron. Go easy on your daily cuppa.
