This topic is one of the most common and talked about whenever you pick the subject of Mahabharata So if I am to write on this subject I must prepare myself for some kind of onslaught and total disagreement of the argument that I might put forth However I am prepared to face this because I firmly believe in what I want to sayWe will check what Draupadi was and who she was Just to access the magnanimity of the topic that we are about to discuss We need it just to make sure we know what subject we are discussing We must first notice that how different she was She was unique right from her birthShe was not conceived in the mothers womb She was born from fire and it is said that she was born young not infant Just imagine all the genetic qualities that she might have inherited Also imagine how she would have developed any filial feelings towards her parents She was the darling princess of one of most prominent and powerful kingdom of that time She was the daughter of a mighty king whose lifes mission was only to defeat someone She was the sister to a man who was like her born out of fire with all the weapons along with him She was also sister to Shikhandi who once was a girl and later changed her gender to a boy Dont you think it was a complex childhood she had unlike other princesses She soon became the wife of Pandavas She got 5 husbands which was very unconventional for any timeperiod As she entered her inlaws house she came to know that her husbands are under a constant threat Finally when she became the queen she was given a piece of land which was kind of barren She bore a son to every husband and therefore became a mother to 5 sons However in her duty to her husbands and bearing the dictates of her destiny she has to get away from all of them and live in exile for 12 years And guess what all of them were killed mercilessly She never was able to enjoy the motherhood the way others doShe was a not a simple personshe was the dear friend of Lord Krishna In fact her name was also Krishnaa She earned the grace of Lord with her devotion and steadfastness to righteousness She is of course the one who is accused most for bringing about the war But is it true Lets go into details as to what conspiredWe know that she refused to marry Karna during the Swayamvara Lets acknowledge that she said those words But were they wrong Till then nobody in public sense knew who Karna really was So actually she blurted out only the truth But okay lets admit that those words were hurting So are they enough to cause a war in which all the warriors of the country would fight to death Are all the men so much foolish that they would fight over the words of a woman Does Karnas insult call for death of everybody Does not it sound a totally illogical idea Later on she is accused of calling Duryodhna the son of a blind This was true but hurting Duryodhna was vengeful But does it call for a war Even if yes who would participate All the great warriors and kings of the country No They wont For a personal insult of a king all the king would not get into a faceoff There needs to be something bigger for thisThere is nothing more humiliating for a woman than losing her modesty Draupadi was humiliated in a court where ladies simply did not go Duryodhna had his day and left no stone unturned to insult Draupadi is whatever way possible Similarly Karna did not desist from calling her a whore and prompting Duryodhna to denude herI will cite an example of similar nature that might not have the same magnanimity but the essence The example of Sahiban comes into mindIn the story of Mirza and Sahiban Sahiban is accused of breaking the arrows another legend says that she hoisted them on the tree of Mirza Consequently when her brothers came they killed Mirza Among all the love stories that go round only this one is where the female is accused because of her treachery In fact in all the other duos the name of the female comes earlier than the male eg Heer Ranjha Laila Majnu Sasi Punnu Sohni Mahiwal However Mirza Sahiban is the only story where female gets her name later People tend to forget that Sahiban also killed herself because she could not live without Mirza If she had to ditch him she would not have fled with him It was her devotion to both her brothers and Mirza that brought up this incidentIndian psyche is maledominant and they quickly come to a point where they can declare a female the kingpin of everything evil This is what happened with this story of Mirza and Sahiban Nobody cared to explore what else could have conspired or gone wrongThere is a song in Punjabi sung by Gurdas Mann which compiles this thinking Satt Bhara ik Mirza baaki kissa kaaraan ne Kalli Sahiban buri banati mard hazaran ne It says that 7 brothers Sahibans brothers 1 Mirza and various thousands of other men made Sahiban the only one guilty Punjabi version reads like this This song clearly takes you through what happens topic of our discussion What actually caused Mahabharata Why everybody had to die in order to get whatIf you remember Krishna had gone to Hastinapur being an emissary of peace He had told the entire court that the Pandavas will not reject whatever he promises here He asked for 5 villages to be given to them There was no demand of war or reinstatement of Draupadis honor The offer was rejected outright Duryodhna was eager to have war He was amply supported by Karna He was equally not stopped by his father But Pandavas had submitted their will to the will of Krishna Where was the question of asking for warIn the capital of Kingdom Virata named Upaplavaya where the allies of Pandavas sat and discussed the possibilities Krishna had rejected all the claims of war He declared that for personal revenges you cant ask every male to die The reason was the greed of Duryodhna The reason was the unmindful support of Karna The reason was the blind act played by Dhritrashtra The reason was the poisonous role of Shakuni Draupadis words bore insult not warI dont feel that Draupadi had even 1 part to play in the war However very unintelligently for men she is termed as the main cause which sounds illogical and without any consideration of the things that actually happened

The title may sound outrageous to you but I have thought about it for quite long Among all the reasons that I can think of and will discuss here Karna seems to be the one who stands tall So before you go on and call me a moron do read what I have to writeShantanu was the reason because he changed the destiny of Kuru dynasty by falling for Satyavati He showed signs of normal man when actually he should have kept his personal liking aside giving priority to his son and his kingdom But still we cant definitely say what would have happened otherwiseI see Satyavati as a great reason because she not only made Bheesma to take the oath but also went on to have sons from his son Vyasa Had she not asked for that boon from Shantanu the course of the history could have been different Yet again we cant load her with all the burden of being a causeThough he was as powerful as any sage could be he was a kind of a silent participant in everything Mahabharata Right from being the outofwedlock son of Satyavati and celebrated sage Parashara he was the one who fathered Dhritrashtra Pandu and Vidura and later on helped Gandhari get Kauravas from the distorted fetus Had he intervened things could have been different But yes he was a sage and his duty was to advice and not to force so we cant burden him too muchBheesma played a significant role for this war He was right in respecting the wish of his father but he saved the rules of Hastinapura even when they committed heinous atrocities This is where he was wrong and should have intervened Bound by his vow he gave the wrongdoers more power because nobody dare challenge the old warriorHe is accused of being blind even with his mind and being blindly in love with his progeny In fact he needs to share one of the largest portion of blame because he had power he had command and he had dutybut he did not justified any of themSmitten by the fact that his sister was asked to marry the blind Dhritrashtra and not Pandu he took to malicious ways of ruining the whole empire In fact it is he who poisoned the minds of young Kauravas who started hating their cousins right from the beginning He was the one who actually wanted it Lots of people tried vainly to ward off the war but his pride and avarice undid every effort He obviously is to blame from all anglesShe is blamed most However she was right even if she is to be blamed She was happy with whatever her husbands would get but once things went out of control she like Goddess Kali took upon herself that all the wicked persons are killed I hardly blame her because she suffered a lot Moreover a woman cant make so many men commit a folly if they themselves are not at faultThe game of dice is another reason why it all happened When you start deciding fate of people and nation with a game you are sure for your decline However it was just a game and Pandavas did not have the inkling that it would turn out to be the turning point In fact Krishna has declared that among the bad things I am Dyut game of diceKrishna is all to blame but he is God Even if we blame him he is not answerable to anybody Ironically he is the one who plays with all because he is all So though Gandhari cursed him for watching everything he has nothing to lose In fact he is not even in this blamegameI would blame Karna the most There are many reasons for this and I would like to discuss all of them I know that his life is tragic and he was cursed and all of that but he still played the most significant role in the warHe actually had nothing to do with the affair of the Kuru Dynasty If he was thrown out of the picture right from the birth why did he interfere He should have known his place In fact as all other characters of the epic believed that it was destiny he should have also accepted the verdictHe was mighty He was the only match that could contain Arjuna This is the prime reason why Duryodhna never hesitated from the war and did not consider any other alternative Duryodhna believed that because Karna can take out Arjuna theres nobody else who could defeat them Fueled by his own pride to prove that he was warrior he lent support to Duryodhna If he was true friend he should have guided him or should have left him forsaking his favors It was his selfinterest that kept him with Duryodhna It was because of Karna that Duryodhna felt strong enough Karna was selfmotivated and had nothing to do with the kingdoms He took the benefits because they helped him to challenge Arjuna It was his selfpride that led the epic war that ended in killing so many people

Even to this day there are several legends from mythological epics Ramayana and Mahabhrata that are yet to be looked at by scholarsThese eras may have ended but their legendary tales continue to amaze us even today Of so many unheard tales from Mahabharata is one where three family members of both Pandavas and Kauravas died togetherIt is stated the King Dhritrashtra his wife Gandhai and sisterinlaw and mother of Pandavas Kunti embraced their end together in a forest where they had been serving strict penanceWith the end of Kurukshetra War many lives and hopes were lost King Dhritrashtra lost his 99 sons only Yuyutsu survived as he fought alongside Pandavas Pandavas lost their sons including Abhimanyu and his unborn child and Hastinapur lost its gem Bhishma PitamahRight after the war was declared ended Yudhishtra along with Pandavas and the consorts Queen mother Kuntiand and Lord Krishna returned to Hastinapur to officially take over as the true King of HastinapurA grieving King Dhritrashtra embraced his nephews and crowned Yudhishthira as the King After he hugged Yudhishthira he turned to Bhima but due to Krishna s quick sense Bhima was replaced by the metal statue of himself used by Duryodhana during training for warAs Yudhishthira hugged Bhima he crushed the statue into pieces letting out all his anger and falling to his knees apologizing for his follyWhile a grieving Gandhari was joined by Kunti who was too grieving for the loss of their progeny as she too couldn t bear the loss of having the innocent lived being killed for the sake of power15 years had passed on since and the three elders of the Hastinapur Kingdom decided to give up their royal lives and move to forest and serve atonement They expressed their desire to the King and his brothers and proceeded to leaveSanjay who had since birth been by the side of Dhritrashtra too decided to join the trio in their journey For nearly three years they lived in a hermitage deep inside the forestTheir hermitage was near the banks of Ganges and vowed to take holy dip every day requesting Gods to ward off their sins and bless them with moksha One day Dhritrashtra left the hermitage for a bath at the Ganges bank After he left Gandhari Kunti and Sanjaya were caught in a wildfire that engulfed their hermitage Sensing danger they went to ensure Dhritrashta was safeSanjay requested them all move away from the forest fire and approach a safe place but all three declined his advice Dhritrashtra declared that this was their moment of proving their penance and attaining mokshaAll three Dhritrashtra Gandhari and Kunti decided to embrace their fate and receive death then and there They sat in a state of yogic trance and took full control of their bodies with the all the powers they hadDespite Sanjay s endless appeals none of them obliged and died together Sanjay left for Himalayas to lead a life of an asceticAfter almost a year King Yudhishthira was informed about the tragic deaths of his mother uncle and aunt by Narad Muni He immediately left for the place where they died and performed last rite rituals for the family members

It is quite interesting to listen to people talk about the reasoning power of others It is always about others and not about our reasoning power Recently somebody was saying People just do not use their reasoning power in their beliefs They blindly believe The whole world may see something wrong in that source of belief but the believers do not see it They are either brainwashed by others or they brainwash themselves They lose their power of thinking This made me think about the word reason It is a fascinating word I checked in the dictionaryIt means a rational motive for a belief or action and it also means the capacity for rational thought inference and discrimination It is said that only human beings among all animals have the capacity to reason But many a time looking at the violence happening all around the world the question keeps coming to mind if we do really have the capacity to reason I read somewhere War begins not when blood is shed but when anger becomes stronger than reason when lust for revenge and power of self grows stronger than the desire for peace It is when reason is lost everything is lost This seems so true these days What exactly is reason Can it be defined in an absolute way When people believe something or someone with their body and soul do they use their reason In such circumstances it is impossible to be objective Nothing or nobody is perfect there are plus and minus points People see what they want to see the plus or the minus according to their way of thinking It is others who lament the lack of reason Such people may not be using reason in their own dealings with others the chain continues Everyone believes firmly that their actions are the result of careful reasoning But the reasoning of one is so different from the reasoning of another Each person is so different from the other then how can reasoning be the same for everyone Of course it is different in the case of scientific studies I suppose people have to be as objective as possible I do not knowFurther as mentioned above reason means a rational motive for a belief or action So much that is spontaneous would be lost if there was a reason behind everything I remember reading in one of Anne of the Green Gables books in such a case we would be just breathing not living So true Long ago were the days when I used to read one book at a time After starting a book if I liked the beginning of the story I had to finish it But some time along the way I started reading two or three books one in the morning one in the evening or something like that There was no fixed timetable There was no reason behind this It just happened It is fun to live in this world and in two or three other worlds at the same time Then there are those religious beliefs which many say have no scientific reason behind them They believe they were made just to control people In many ways they do control people But for many such beliefs and that faith in a higher power is a source of strength to face the ups and downs in life That is a reason in itself and I believe there is no need for any other reason or for any reason for that matter In this so called reasoning the heart plays a very important role We usually believe with our heart though many think that their beliefs are based on the mind and on reason Yes we give many reasons to prove to ourselves that we are correct That is human nature It has been rightly said by someone People don t always see what their eyes tell them is there They see what they have made up their minds to see The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of We know the truth not only by the reason but by the heart Blaise Pascal

Relations can be categorized as the ones which are bound to us by birth or by the society with the passage of time AND then there are the others which we tend to make with our own sweet will The ones which have our willingness dont burden us since we have chosen them and no one likes proving himself or herself wrong Ha ha but the relations of the first category are at times troublesome for us since we have been gifted so not necessarily of our choice so we keep finding faults in them So actually the problem doesnt lye in the relations but in the EGO behind Whatever category may the relations belong to we should not forget that the almighty has related them to us AND He can never be wrong People meet for a reason let the reason be LOVE
