What is depression?
Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behaviour, feelings and sense of well-being.
Difference from other disorders
However, it should be noted that anxiety disorder and random bouts of mood swings (provided they are not very regular) are not classified as depression. However, if you think that you might be suffering from depression, here are the signs to look out for.
A low feeling that refuses to go away
If you have been lying low for a while, its completely okay. However, if this feeling of being perpetually sad lasts for 3 weeks or more (without it getting better at any point), then it could be a warning sign.
Irritability
Being just sad is not the only sign of depression. If you find yourself being irritable most of the time, it could be a sign of depression.
Changes in behaviour
If you have suddenly stopped caring about how you look when you go to work, just putting on anything you can grab your hands on (which was not the case earlier) then it could be a sign of depression.
Changes in routine
Do you don’t care if you haven’t brushed your teeth or washed your hair this morning? If you have trouble getting on with your daily routine activities then it could be a sign that you are depressed.
Sudden weight loss or gain
This could be due to other medical disorders as well, however if sudden weight loss or weight gain is accompanied by other signs, then you could be depressed.
Suicidal thoughts
This is the biggest give away. If you have (and not more than once) thought about ending your life and have spoken to friends about it, then it could be a sure shot sign of depression.
Change in eating habits
If you have suddenly started eating too much or stopped eating altogether, then it could be a sign of depression.
Inability to concentrate
Do you find it increasingly difficult to concentrate on anything, whether it is work or household activities? If this lasts for more than a week, then it could be a sign of depression.
Desire to be alone
While alone time is good, however if you are suddenly shunning all your friends and family and just want to be alone, then it is a sure shot sign that you are depressed.
No interest in social gatherings or activities
If you liked going out for a weekly movie or dinner date but suddenly feel like not even getting out of the house (and always) then it could be a sign that you are depressed.
A nagging fear
Are you always worried or anxious without knowing the reason for it? If yes, then you could be depressed.
Too much or too little to cry
Have you suddenly reached a stage when nothing makes you laugh or cry? Or do you cry at the drop of a hat without any reason? If you are suffering from any one of these two extremes, you could be depressed.
