BRAHMARSHI PATRI asks young people to be open to learning from others. That’s when you are truly spiritual, he says

Attaining inner peace is not easy because for one thing,it means replacing old, ingrained habits that do not contribute to inner peace with new ones that do.Those of us who have tried replacing any habit will testify as to how tricky this is.Young people are even more impatient. They are still searching for the meaning of life and often have many misgivings. When they have these misgivings, misapprehensions and question marks, they are often highly dissatisfied. But once their curiosity is satisfied, their paths to their future become clearer. We want young people to aspire to be ‘Spiritual Youth’.

What does the term, spirituality mean? And who is a spiritual young person? The basic thing we have to learn is ‘not to judge others’.To judge others, we almost need huge amounts of Himalayan data to understand a person. So a wise man goes about collecting data but never concludes anything.

A nonwise man or an unwise man never collects any data, never bothers about data and keeps on judging everybody. He judges himself as well.He tells himself that he is very stupid, very negative, very horrible and concludes that he is good for nothing. This kind of inferiority complex exists in many young people. This is because of imposing wrong judgements on one’s own self. Such a person begins to think that all others are superior. Once these judgements are removed from his thinking pattern, he has already touched basic spirituality.

There are two levels of spirituality — the first one is to gain common sense and develop a scientific temper about all things. The second level of spirituality centres around meditation, going deeper into one’s own self and harnessing the soul’s energies. This is a higher level of spirituality. But the basic level of spirituality is removal of judgement and to stop complaining about others or about yourself, removing complexes and, hence basically becoming free of your own past.

The past is no indicator of the present or the future. Then why are our minds always struck in the past? In life, no one is really bothered about your past. Nobody asks about your past, neither does anyone care about it. Most people are only concerned with what you are doing in the present! We are not bothered what you will do in the future or what you will become in the future. We don’t care for the future and also we don’t care for the past. What’s of concern is what you do now.

One of the basic points in spirituality is to listen to others and to their experiences of life. When we listen, we take time away from our own selves and give time to listen to another’s problems and to the predicaments that they are facing. In the process, we learn. Basically, spirituality means listening to others, a very rare commodity.

Ever wondered why we have only got one mouth and two ears — that’s because we have to speak half of what we are to listen. But usually the opposite is true.We go blah, blah, blah and never ever listen to others.

We don’t give any value to our ears.We keep on talking and talking as if we know everything. Let us pledge to remove these faulty notions. That is the basic thing in spirituality. We have to learn from others.Only when you decide that you have to learn from others, then you are spiritual.

When your mind is closed, then there is no possibility of ever learning from others. Then you really are a devil. When you decide that you have to learn from others, then you are spiritual, in fact, highly spiritual.

Young People Are Like Flowers

This is an excellent blog and not just for youth.Young people are like fresh flowers. They still don’t know about life. At that stage, you have to learn from your gurus and plan for your future.
