Please tell us in detail about different chakras in our body, their placement, importance, and how to activate them.
— D K Dhameja

■ Ancient scriptures carry varied descriptions of seven to eight chakras. The first among them is Muladhara Chakra. It is directly related to the subconscious mind that stores our karmas and experiences. According to the Law of Karma, this chakra is instrumental in setting up prarabdha, collection of past karmas of an individual. Some people’s awareness is stuck in this chakra for the greater part of their lives. They are not able to get out of it in their lifetime. Particularly those afflicted by kamavasana, lust, unbridled consumerism, and are ensnared by tamo guna, find themselves trapped in the Muladhara Chakra. This chakra is responsible for the body’s energy levels, our enthusiasm and progress. But, if our energy stagnates in it, this chakra also brings about laziness, lethargy, self-centredness, and uncontrolled attachment to things.

In the lower part of this chakra, resides the Kundalini in an unawakened state. It can be activated by yoga sadhana and when it awakens, it rises through the six chakras and travels to the Sahasrara, crown chakra. The awakened Kundalini leads to the storehouse of several potentialities that a sadhaka may not even know exist in him.

The brain receives pranic current through the Muladhara Chakra established at the end of the Sushumna Nadi. Located at the base of the spinal column, this is the foundation chakra. It is depicted by four petals that are indicative of the mind’s four elements: manas, buddhi, chitta and ahamkara. Its mantra is Lam and its element is earth. Also depicted as an inverted triangle, its colour is red. Its guna: gandha, odour; karmendriya: guda, anus; lokah: bhu, earth; jnanendriya: nasika, nose, and adhipati devta, presiding deity: Brahma with his powers. One should be able to limit consumption, laziness, and sexual indulgence, and constantly focus on this chakra to awaken it.

Another way to awaken this chakra is to follow yama and niyama and to remain in sakshi bhava, witness consciousness. When this chakra awakens, you experience courage, fearlessness and bliss. Attainment of siddhis require fearlessness and awareness.

Those who practise Muladhara Chakra sadhana become courageous, brave, energetic, bright and gifted. They develop intelligence power and express many talents. ■
