The caste system has been long abolished in India, but it is still found in bits and pieces in the country --- if the discrimination against Dalits was not enough, more fuel is being added to the fire by a township that is set to come up in Bengaluru --- this township caters to “only Brahmins” and would only sell apartments to the Brahmin community.

The Vedic Village- Shankar Agraharam, a ‘Brahmin only’ housing project was planned on the outskirts of Bengaluru in 2013. The international media picked up the story and reported the disturbing trend of ‘segregated housing’ and ‘housing apartheid’ in India.

However, construction of the township is in full swing. The Sanathana Dharma Parirakshana Trust that is funding and developing the project believes in “ emancipation of the living conditions of the Brahmin community and to closely work towards creating a liveable environment, and assets for the future generation of the community”

Not only this, the community can have Non-Brahmin members as house helps since the Brahmin community “will not sweep floor anyway” --- says an executive. Apart from non-brahmin house help, friends and relatives of other castes are allowed to visit.

At a time when the country is fighting hard to fight the caste discrimination, this project is a step backward.
