A Worm’s World

Two worms, twins, Joe and Jim Getalong, were sitting on the edge of a tall grass lawn looking up at the night sky.

“You see that galaxy cluster just off center to your right?”

“Let me look,” Joe said, and he adjusted his telescope to see what Jim was seeing.

“You see, it’s shaped like a monkey with an apple in its mouth, and a long tail. That’s what it looks like to me.”

“I see it.”

“Do you?”

“Sure,” said Joe, “but it looks more like a cat with a mouse in its mouth, and a very furry tail.”

“OK,” said Jim, “I can see that too.”

They agreed that the cluster could look like many things, and that it was also very beautiful, and that it had no need of a name or description.

Then…

“Do you see that?”

“What…”

“Stars just to the left of the galaxy we were looking at. They just went out. And the galaxy throughout is losing stars.”

“What!?”

“Look.”

Jim expanded his view. Joe did the same. All across the night sky stars were going out like city lights in a black out.

“The stars are going out.”

“Yeah. That’s what it looks like.”

“What does it mean?”

“Well, if all the stars go out it will be dark, like it is for us underground.”

“Right. Worms will rule the world.”

“Right, a worm’s world. Imagine that!”
