THE ART OF LOSING

The need to win is primal. There is a base instinct in all of us that pushes us to be bigger, better, faster. We teach our children, exhort them to work harder and strive towards their goals. As a competitive species we push ourselves too. Darwin I guess explained it best. It stems from our survival instinct. We all know how to gear up for a big fight, but what about losing? Do we know enough to about how to lose.

Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton are engaged in what is perhaps the most keenly watched battle across the globe. Now towards the fag end of the campaign, where Ms. Clinton seems to have the upper hand Donald Trump is beginning to whine. He is blaming the microphone, unfair questions, and a biased media. If he loses the American presidential election, he claims it is because it was "stolen" from him. We do not know the outcome of the US elections but what we do know for sure is the Mr. Trump will not be a good loser.

What is a good loser? Certainly I don't mean someone who accepts defeat. The acceptance must go hand in hand with quiet introspection. Winning is easy. Losing teaches us something invaluable about who we truly are. Disappointment is natural. But do we blame ourself or do we blame others. Do we have it in us to try again or is it easier to give up. Do we analyse what went wrong or complain about bad luck. Do we think of the ways to appease our gods or do we work harder. Do we cry, do we laugh, do we sulk or smile. Do we feel like losers or is losing an opportunity to do it again, better.

I don't know the answers. It is sometimes easy just to ask questions. The questions themselves have a way of finding answers. What I do know is that life has a way of throwing us challenges every now and then. We cannot win all. There are times we will lose and then again. What determines who we are as people is not our victories. It is our loss. Difficult times are our best teachers, pain and loss shall make us stronger. Donald Trump may win or lose the elections, but his behaviour post victory or defeat will determine who is he as a man.

Regular practice of Reiki helps in developing this inner strength to move on in life , having learnt the lesson from losing.
