Does God Exist?
It is not just an atheist who would ask the question – “What kind of God can allow that to happen?” Seeing the misery and starvation of people Swami Vivekananda burst out “I do not believe in a God who cannot give me bread here, to give me heaven hereafter.”
Such questions do not spring from intellect; they spring more from the heart. Anyone who goes deeply into realities of life as it exists cannot but ask: “What kind of God……….”
This is because the very concept or “Feeling” of God amounts to four very important aspects –
(1) Sarvajnatva- i.e. All Knowing, (2) Sarvavyapakatva i.e. All Pervading, (3) Sarvashaktitva i.e. All Powerful &
(4) Paramakarunamaya i.e. Utmost Compassionate. Actually the word “ karuna” means, to melt at the sight of misery and suffering and torture. Somehow, taking a look at the happenings around anyone would feel the fourth epithet missing often. It makes anyone tearful.
All these attributes automatically coexist when God is comprehended as “someone”; an Intelligence that is governing the universe. And the relation to that Intellegence with an innate faith or with a conceptual understanding does involve compassion.
Without “karuna” God cannot be “someone”- this again is not an intellectual argument, but a genuine “feeling”. Neither can this feeling be totally removed nor the question above that comes up about life be evaded or bypassed. The greatest devotees of God have expressed these feelings at some point or the other. A story comes to my mind: A child who was in the hospital was undergoing lot of pain. Parents called a pastor to help the boy. When the pastor came, he tried to soothe the boy saying, “Child, when you feel pain, think that Jesus is kissing you”. And the boy replied, “Then father, please tell Jesus not to kiss me so much.” Children are plain, straight. These feelings do come, as the soul basically loves God and, love always means a protection. It’s not that the world wants no pain at all. It has more to do with overtures in torture, violence and their kin.
In an atheist there is more possibility to find solution to the situations that impinge upon human conscience, since there are no fast held theories. Theist or atheist, it is a necessary obligation upon human consciousness to develop such tremendous purity power & love that can – (1) sublimte pain and, (2) transform the ‘baser metal’. Theorising will not do. Power of character alone can “speak” and, work. In everyone is this power – It needs to be awakened. And, that is God.
What is sex?
You have two ways to look at it – one is, in terms of evolution; another, from what the traditions have handed down.
Speaking evolutionarily – an amoeba or an alga did not have any differentiation. A single cell, just went on to divide itself to become many – is it not? Later came strain differences among living creatures that subsequently developed into what came to be known as sex differentiation in what are called higher forms of life–science tell you.
In almost all traditions of the world it has been held that to begin with, creation was through the mind; later man and woman were created to beget progency through physical union. When creation was through the mind, it was not just through the mind of God; sages and divinities who were created through the mind of God, also had this capacity – tells Bhagavata.
Both of these views are not ‘opinions’ or really any views. Both have originated from careful study and in depth understanding. And, both point out to one thing – sex (or sexual differentiation) came into a existence for propagation of progency in certain life forms.
It needs to be understood very frankly that sex is just is; it’sneither good nor bad, it just is. It is neither sacred nor sinful, neither right nor wrong, it just is; it is neither God’s insistence nor devil’s trap, it simply is. Anything you give over importance to, tends to rule you. So it has been with sex. This understanding is very much needed. If someone doesn’t want it he or she is simply free to that choice. Similarly for those who want to have it. Those that are over indulgent will eventually come to realize like King Yayati that “lust can never be satiated through lust.” Yayati borrowed youth from his son to satiate his desire for pleasure. Satiation never came; only he was exhausted.
Wherefrom did the idea of pleasure get associated with sex? Is it not amusing that a creature that is endowed with conscious awareness – the human being, could associate the idea of pleasure with something that is actually associated with physical pain, exhaustion and with those organs that are constantly removing waste products of the body? This has to be calmly understood. The idea of pleasure in sexual activity is present only in the human race, advancing with the advancement of what’s called ‘civilization’ and such pleasure comes from ego and desire. Ego finds its satisfaction in subjugating someone and the desire for this lurks in the heart. Subjugating or owning the opposite sex is a subtle desire that leads to all frivolous nature. This is the reason for sex to have become associated with immorality and lowliness.
As against this is the actual reality of love & bliss. Mother Nature’s evolvements are never for harming, but are for sublimation towards higher evolvements of divine qualities. In what are called higher forms, more and more of love is made to manifest. In evolving sex, the qualities of love, caring, living as support to one another, behavioural changes from arrogant patterns to more co-operation and acceptance – are all in the program. Behind the sexual urge is a need or deeper urge to become “naught.”
Love of the conjugal type has been experienced by many souls who have loved the Supreme as their Beloved. There is nothing sexual, nor any element of shame, secrecy or ‘extra speciality’ that the world might accrue, in it. It is simply becoming totally “naught.”
Here I would gently like to say, to see unnaturalness in celibacy is no more wise than seeing the same in sexual activity. Celibacy is a choice just as sex is. And that choice came to human soul through deeper intuition and understanding.
The sages observed and saw the overtures and depletion of energy involved in the sexual activity as also its binding nature. In the Brahmananda mimamsa of the Taittiriya Upanishad, which is a beautiful analysis as well as accounting of levels of bliss, it is a revelation to note that at each level of bliss the sage adds”Srotriyasya ca akamahatasya” - “this bliss is also experienced by those who have heard of the Supreme and are unhurt by desire.”Akamahata literally means “unslaughtered by desire.” Indeed, desire slaughters. The instant one stands aside, immense peace issues. The female represents yin energy of the universe and male represents yang energy; thus desire here becomes strongest. Yin and yang have to realize that they are not opposites but are full in themselves. Sublimation of yin and yang to their fullness is the purpose of human evolution and its biological physiological perfection. This is the reason why Buddha nature is worshipped over mara nature, as it stands above desire.
It needs to be understood that it is only through love that sex gets its sanctification and not otherwise. Ego, pride, desire reduce it to a tool of dominance, abuse, torture, violence & so on; only pleasure reduces the user to frivolity. No one says romance or romantic love is bad, but everyone does know indulgence ruins. The world has remembered the unforgettable lovers along with its great souls. Innocent or deep romance among those in love has never been condemned, but everyone knows infatuation is injurious; or costly. If a couple can evolve their relationship into perfect love i.e. where self dissolves from both sides c o m p l e t e l y, there comes a fullness, such oneness that they become “singular” just as the word “couple” grammatically is. Conjugal love that attains to such oneness becomes worshippable. It can be completely sexless also while being in deepest of love. Without this understanding & realization, humanity is left to wallow in gender consciousness.
The education to the understanding of who you really are begins when you shed the male/female identity. In that exploration you come to realize “Manobudhyahankara chittani naham, na ca srotra jihve na ca ghrana netre” –“I’m not the mind, nor the intellect, nor the ego, nor the chitta; neither am I the ears, the tongue, the nostrils or the eyes” (Sri Shankara’s Nirvanashatkam). You are of the nature of sexless existence, of pure “Isness” that’s far beyond any senses or sensual satisfaction. You will recognize that, that Awareness is much, much more true experience of Joy Bliss & Fulfilment than anything external. It’s only then that you truly reach home.

My dear editors at The Speaking Tree
Devotees have been bringing to me the sunday issues of The Speaking Tree. I feel happy to see it. In the issue of 3rd July (Page2) there was discussion on “Does God Exist”. I also oberserved the discussions going on about sex and I was particularly moved by Kdutta Gupta’s asking to be educated to know who we really are. I am sending here two notes concerning these two topics. Will you publish them?
God Bless your endeavours in spreading values of the spirit.
Affectionately
