Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashmi in some parts of India, is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Lord Rama over the demon-king Ravana. It depicts the victory of good over evil.

Duss means ten and hara means defeat. So also, Vijay means victory and dashmi means the tenth day. The ten heads of Ravana represent the vices within us. So Dussehra symbolizes the elimination of the ten vices of the human mind. Vijayadashmi represents the victory on the tenth day of the war between Lord Rama – our true nature – and Ravana – the embodiment of vices.

Each of Ravana’s heads symbolizes various vices like anger, boredom, despair, fear, greed, hatred, ill-will, jealousy and lust. As long as Lord Rama kept shooting down these heads, Ravana wouldn’t die. Finally, it was only when he shot the arrow at Ravana’s navel that he was killed. The navel, at the root, symbolizes the ego.

The ego primarily arises due to our assumption of a false identity, an assumption of being an individual, separate from totality. This primary ego then gives rise to the secondary or false ego, where we consider oneself special and demand credit and attention. Due to this illusory identity, we are unable to experience our essential oneness with everything, be it living or non-living. Everything and everyone are part of the same Consciousness, the same vibration animates through everything.

Due to this feeling of separateness, actions are performed with a feeling of doer-ship. This wrong belief of who-we-are makes us experience negativity and express negative vibes, which besides affecting the people around us, also affects inanimate objects.

Very often, we would have seen that when people receive bad news, or bear heavy losses, or face challenging situations, they blame it on other people or inanimate objects around them. Not only do they think negatively about their homes, businesses, jobs, vehicles, and so on, but also act negatively by banging and throwing things. They indulge in negative thoughts such as:

  • This (home, business, machine, office, shop, etc.) has brought me only misfortune. Ever since I bought it, I have only faced trouble and losses.
  • This thing is a bad omen for me.
  • Buying this was a waste of money. I should have bought something else.
  • This machine has to always break down when I need it the most.

All things in the universe, whether living or non-living, tangible or intangible, are constantly vibrating. Even objects that appear stationary are also vibrating. When we emit positive vibrations for something, it begins to resonate with our vibrations. By emitting positive vibes, we receive positive vibes in response. When we think negatively about inanimate objects, our vibrations affect them detrimentally.

When we speak, feel, or think positively about something, our vibrations affect our attunement with it. A certain machine may not work for anybody else but will work like a song for you. You may not consciously understand why, and you may even find it surprising. You may have heard someone say, “I can never get your bike to start. Only you can do it!” or “I can never work on your laptop. God knows how it works for you!” These are examples of how people are attuned to certain inanimate objects around them.

When we buy a new house, we invite people to a housewarming, so that people assemble and pray together. Their sacred positive vibrations help clean the atmosphere in the house. The house begins to resonate with a new auspicious frequency. This is one of the ways of sending healing rays to inanimate objects.

The right understanding of who-we-truly-are enables us to surrender the ego within us and annihilate all vices. We can then experience the true Self, our true essence, and express its divine qualities like love, joy, peace, creativity, courage, compassion, abundance, and so forth.

With the right understanding, our vibrations too change, and positive vibes set in. We then begin to shower our blessings on all beings and things. We begin to notice changes not only within us but also in the people and non-living objects around us.

In India, the wise sages of yore have set up the custom of worshipping machines, vehicles, and objects on the festival of Dussehra. They would treat inanimate objects like living beings. This is a way of sending healing light to things that play an important role in our lives.

Since then, it has been a custom in India during Dussehra for people to clean and worship their vehicles, appliances and tools that they use. We can practice this and start improving our attunement with everything around us. We can offer our prayer with healing words, such as:

  • May this home/ office be blessed with love, joy, peace, and prosperity.
  • May this home/office always experience an abundant inflow of wealth.
  • All the machines/ appliances/ equipment/ tools in this home/ office are in perfect attunement with me and flawlessly working.
  • All my gadgets/ tools always support me.
  • I am truly sorry for the way I have neglected or misused all the gadgets/ tools/ things in the past.
  • I thank all my gadgets / tools for making my life easy and comfortable.

Let’s celebrate this Dussehra in right earnest by attuning and harmonizing ourselves with our environment.

Happy Thoughts!
