Our soul has many layers covering it. These layers are impressions accumulated throughout our life. These impressions are imprinted on us from all our thoughts, words, and deeds. If our actions are negative, it is as if we add dark spots on a clear complexion. These dark spots must be removed before we can experience the luminous soul. The blemishes can be caused by thoughts, words, or deeds arising from anger, lust, greed, attachment, and ego, keeping us from experiencing the pure energy and power of the soul. We need to remove the coverings that block the luminosity.
To understand this let us use the example of an electric light. The filament that radiates light is encased in a glass bulb, a thin covering clear enough so that the light can shine through. But if we put a lampshade around a bulb, the light is dimmed a bit. When we look at the lamp, we see light shining from the shade, but are not aware of the actual bulb. If we put a colored cloth over the lampshade, the light becomes even dimmer and takes on the color of the cloth. We become less aware of the brilliant white light emitted by the bulb. If we then put a sheet or blanket over the lampshade, the light is much dimmer. The more coverings we add, the less we see the light.
It is the same with our soul. Our soul shines with a brilliance greater than many suns. What power and luminosity it has! But it is covered by many layers of anger, lust, greed, attachment and ego.
Soul’s True Nature Is Love
God is love. The soul is of the same essence as God. Thus, the soul is also love. Where there is love, there is no room for violence and anger. Where there is love, there is no room for dishonesty, deceit, and lies. Where there is love there is no room for greed and selfishness. Where there is love, there is no room for ego. And where there is purity, there is no room for lust. If any negative quality takes possession of a relationship, love suffers. If negative qualities blemish our soul, we are distracted from our empowered state.
Let us think of the times in which we loved someone with all our heart and soul. It may have been the love between parent and child, best friends, spouses or lover and beloved. When we love somebody, could we ever dream of hurting them in any way? Could we ever think of being dishonest and lying to them? Could we ever think of hurting that person to fulfill our own lust? Could we ever think of being selfish and greedy, of not sharing and giving them what they need?
We can find out who is running our show by evaluating whether we are motivated by love or by anger, lust, greed, attachment and ego. Whenever these five deadly passions raise their ugly heads, we can be sure the soul has been overpowered.
