Too often we are distressed by the mishaps, accidents, and diseases that befall us in the world. We wonder why innocent children die or a family member who seems to have a heart of gold is stricken with a fatal illness. On the surface the events of the world do not seem to make sense. However, if we study the scriptures of some of the world’s religions, we find a belief in what is called the law of karma and reincarnation.
Our soul has been in existence since God brought all creation into being. It is said in the scriptures that at first God was all alone, an unlimited Ocean of all Light, all love, and all consciousness. It is said that God was one, but wished to be many. That thought caused a vibration that resulted in two principles: Light and Sound. This creative principle brought into being plane after plane of creation. It is said that God then sent out parts or drops of God as souls to inhabit the worlds.
As souls became engaged and absorbed in the world in which they found themselves, they slowly began to forget about their original existence as a part of God. The world held many attractions and the soul became lost in them. The soul became so identified with the body and the mind through which it worked, that it lost the realization that it was soul.
A system of karma was established in the universe so that souls would bear the fruit of their actions. The law of karma states that every action has a reaction. This is also one of the fundamental laws of physics. Everything that a soul thinks, does, and says is recorded, and that each soul must reap the fruits of its actions. Thus, our soul has been cycling through existences on a variety of planes, in this world, and in a variety of bodies.
Love is the law of the universe. At the end of this life, the amount of love we gave to others, the compassion we showed others, and the help and sacrifice we made for others is what is measured. It is who we are as a person, not what we do or achieve, that counts in this creation of God. By contacting the creative principle of God, the inner Light and Sound, through meditation we experience a transformation. The Light and Sound of God wash away the karma of eons and fills us with the true state of love.
Meditation, pure and simple, is the withdrawing of our attention from the outer world and focusing it at the third eye. To practice meditation on the inner Light and Sound, we sit in a pose that is the most convenient for us, in which we can be still for the longest period of time. Once we close our eyes and focus our attention in front of us, at the seat of the soul—located between and behind the two eyebrows--we then repeat any name of God with which we feel comfortable. This silent repetition keeps the mind occupied and prevents it from wandering. When we are fully collected at the eye focus, we may begin to see some flashes of light, circles of light, or lights of various colors. We should continue to gaze with full attention into the middle of what is lying in front of us. As we concentrate more and more, these lights will stabilize, and we may see golden light or red, white, green, blue, violet, purple, yellow, or orange light. The bliss and happiness we experience in meditation stays with us even after we come out of meditation. It is a wellspring of love and peace that we can tap into any time we wish.
Let us try to live our lives so as to nullify the effects of our karma. We can do this by spending time in meditation and ethical living. We cannot change what we have done, but we can prevent ourselves from sowing the seeds of a dark future. Let us instead sow the seeds for a rich harvest filled with spirituality, love, and Light.
