TAKING SEX SERIOUSLY
I am guessing for most sex and spirituality are completely unrelated.Distinct from each other and disturbingly, in many cases one is considered a lofty ideaL state, and the other often associated with the baser instinct of man. But such a simplistic, cliched definition is not true.
Sexual energy is a primal and creative force in the universe that brings things alive. Libido is commonly referred to as ‘life force’. It is the reproductive energy that keeps the planet teeming with creatures, both big and small. It is this relentless drive to procreate that keeps us going. The universe needs this pulsating energy to survive. Nature thrives because of sex.
As humans we need it too, in more ways than one. We tend to think the main purpose of sex is pleasure, but it can be so much more than that. Sex helps open our hearts to love, it enables us to experience bliss and brings us to a meditative state, even if it is limited to a few precious moments. There have been numerous studies that show the link between physical intimacy and meaningful relationships. It is necessary to feel the each other in body and spirit, to make that connection. By loving another, and feeling loved we feel content, at peace and joyful. Spirituality is the evolution of our consciousness, and the spiritual evolution of our society depends on the values of compassion and love.
There are many perspectives on sex. Our ancient vedas stress on celibacy as a means to attain a higher self. For centuries we have been trying to harness this energy into a creative force or a higher state of consciousness. The yogic philosophy claims ‘Kundalini’ is the awakening of the highest form of pure sexual energy, which lies dormant within us. Tantra regards the human body as a temple and all the reproductive fluids as offerings. It allows us to accept, understand and absorb the duality of the worlds, and our own sexuality. Only then there can be any hope of transcending the ordinary and finding the divine. Like I said, there are many perspectives, but all agree that sexual energy is a force to reckon with. How we use it, is up to us.
We cannot create or destroy this energy, only transform it to help us with our spiritual awakening. The path to our awakening does not lie in excess, or in ignoring it, running away from it or abusing it. Spirituality is about discovering our true selves, beyond the egoistic, self centered lives that we lead. To accept who we truly are, to feel intensely, to transcend the immediate and move beyond, to heal, to express, to love. Sex can help us do all that and more. All through history time and culture have defined our attitude to sex.Our ‘modern’ society revels in instant gratification, focussing usually on technique and fulfillment. We mostly see repression and stigma associated with sex. We tend to giggle at anything that suggests taking sex seriously, but there is a potential of our sexual experiences to uplift us from the ordinary.
Putting sex in the spiritual context can help us overcome our own underlying fears and inhibitions. Sexual maturity comes from neither repression nor over indulgence. Like with most things in this vast universe, it must be balanced. Sexual ecstasy is not a bad word. The word ecstasy has greek roots, it is derived from the word ekstasis, meaning ‘to stand outside’. Spiritual upliftment and sexual ecstasy both take us outside of our shallow selves, beyond our egos into something far deeper and meaningful. So let’s take sex seriously, it can help.
Second degree Reiki is often referred to as beginning of spiritual journey. It is because after attunement Kundalini some times gets touched by intense energy and it may be experienced as enhanced sexual surge and with passage of time it may lead to faster spiritual development and realization.
