Science and the Bible
The Bible is not a science book, yet it is scientifically accurate. We are not aware of any scientific evidence that contradicts the Bible. When studying the science of the ancient world, one is more apt to be impressed with its ignorance than to admire its accuracy. However, the Bible offers a definite exception to this rule. The scriptures are abounding with statements suggesting scientific knowledge which predates the corresponding discoveries of secular science. Given that Bible writers were not scientists, and given that the scientific information at their disposal was generally misleading, the accuracy of the Bible can only be attributed to the inspiration of God. In fact, Isaac Newton, in his famous scientific work, Pri- ncipia, stated, "The most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion on an intelligent and powerful Being."
The following are few examples of remarkable statements found in the Holy Bible, now verified by science. Science expresses the universe in five terms: time, space, matter, power and motion. So does Bible "In the beginning (time) God created (power) the Heaven (space) and the Earth (matter)... And the Spirit of God moved (motion) upon the face of the waters." [Genesis 1:1, 3 … written some 3500 years ago].The prophet Isaiah who lived almost 3,000 years ago stated "It is He that . . . stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in." [40:22]Scientists are beginning to understand that the universe is expanding, or stretching out. Scripture clearly tells us At least seven times that God stretches out the heavens like a curtain.
What Holds the Earth Up? In ancient times it was variously believed that the earth sat on a large animal or a giant or even that a mythical Atlas supported the pillars that held heaven and earth apart, and/or carried the earth around on his shoulders (Where he stood while doing so presents an interesting conundrum). However in what is probably the oldest book of the Bible, Job, living in an ancient culture that knew nothing about space or planets, asserted that God hung the earth on nothing (1500 B.C.) or, in other words, the earth free floats in space."He stretches out the north over empty space; he hangs the earth on nothing [Job 26:7] what a remarkable, yet simple statement of fact. The earth is suspended in space—held up by nothing. How did Job know this scientific fact? The Old Testament prophets wrote as they were moved by the spirit of God. (2 Peter 1:21)
Flat versus Round Earth: For thousands of years people believed the earth was flat. If one went too far, he would fall over the edge. In the 1500s, the first ship sailed around the world, thus proving the earth was round. But the knowledge that the earth was round was recorded in the Bible about 3000 years ago. The prophet Isaiah (40:22) spoke of the “circle of the earth.” Solomon wrote, that God “set a compass [circle] upon the face of the deep.” (Proverbs 8:27) Indeed, the Bible declared this fact by inspiration of God.
It is difficult to wrap our minds around the concept of infinite space and one Supreme Being who created all things. Well has the Psalmist said, in consideration of the immensity and the minutiae of God’s providence over all his works—“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me: it is high, I cannot attain unto it.” (Psalm 139:6) No, we cannot; but Oh, what a thrilling sense of mingled reverence, love and adoration fills the heart, when thus we catch a glimpse of the intellectual and moral glory and majesty of our God!
Men have always been seeking to understand the mysteries of the universe, but most have never looked beyond their own pride or superstition. Indeed, the “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.” (1 Corinthians 3:19) When men become humble before their God, when they see their own littleness, only then will they begin to realize that their benevolent Creator has prepared the Heavens and the Earth for them, and that He has also planned for mankind’s ultimate blessing throughout eternity. In God’s due time, the mysteries of His vast universe will be open to explore and understand. “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth and their words to the entire world.” Psalms 19:1-4
Why Bible? The Bible says “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16). In other words, The Bible is the absolute word of God. All scripture is God's very words to us and all scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. Paul presents that the Scriptures is the solution of all kinds of evils of the world. All Scripture is God-breathed. God is the author of the Bible. In Genesis 2:7, God breathed into man’s nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being. In the same way all Scripture is God-breathed. All Scripture is inspired by God and God used inspired people to reveal his plan of salvation to all men. In the New Testament, the phrase “the word of God” appears over 300 times. 2 Peter 1:21 says, “For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” This means that the Bible is divine and there is no fault.
