Question: When my friends pass away it's like a wake up call. I think about how fragile life is and wonder if I'm living my life as I should. But then things get busy and I forget. I get so caught up in the world it seems like death will happen to everyone but me.
Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj: A point comes in everyone’s life in which he or she realizes that the body will die, and the bodies of our loved ones will also die. There is no escape from this. We need to turn our attention from seeking immortality through the physical body into searching for eternity through identification with the soul.
Most do not want to accept the fact that we are mortal at the physical level. Only those who realize the inevitability of death turn their attention to finding another way out of this suffering. They stop identifying with the body and start identifying with the soul.
Saints and mystics are conscious of the realities of existence. They are aware that they are souls who have come from God. They know that when we identify with the soul, we will have a true spaceship that can escape the gravitational pull of this physical world. The soul is not made of matter; rather, it is made of Spirit. The soul alone can soar beyond the physical realm into realms of spirit. Spirit is not destructible. It is made of the same essence of God and is eternal. If we could identify with the soul, we would not be bound to the chains of physical existence. There is no escape for the body from this bondage of life, but there is an escape for the soul.
How can we identify with the soul? Meditation is the way to peel off the coverings of the body. Just as we take off our coat, sweater, shirt, or blouse that cover our body, we can take off the layer of our physical body to uncover our soul. Meditation unveils our true self by removing our body covering. In this way, we can discover that we are not the body, but the soul enlivening it.
