Many of us have wondered at different points in our lives whether we really have some supernatural or mystical powers or is that something just told to us to tickle our idle minds and extra active imaginations? Or is it just a way to massage our egos and make us feel more important than we really are as individuals?

ESP

ESP is the supposed faculty of perceiving things by means other than the known senses, for example by telepathy, reading people’s minds, clairvoyance and many more abilities.

Mentalists, Magicians and Clairvoyants

Is Extrasensory perception even real or just a way for magicians to trick us with their sleight of hand illusions? We sometimes see magicians, mentalists and clairvoyants appear on international Got Talent T.V shows displaying extraordinary abilities and wowing all viewers with their gifted abilities of foretelling what someone in the audience has in their bag or wallet. Is this real or just a result of their highly developed power of intuition which somehow is not based on any sense of logical reasoning. Leave aside these magicians, real people have been blessed with intuition, too.

Let’s now analyze some actual people and their testimonials about their newfound or inherent abilities.

There have been several instances of intuitive prediction and wisdom happening to famous people down the ages. Here are a few of them.

Earliest Records

One of the earliest records dates back to 44 BCE when Calpurnia, wife of Julius Caesar foresaw her husband’s assassination. She begged him not to go to the senate but Caesar was adamant and did not listen. The rest is history. Caesar was stabbed and killed, with the words, “Et Tu Brute.”

In 1940, Winston Churchill was dining at his residence, 10 Downing Street, when a German bomb hit nearby. Something told him that it would hit him and his staff in the nearby kitchen next, so he asked everyone to leave quickly. Just moments later, a bomb actually fell completely wiping out the kitchen; all the staff in the kitchen including Churchill were saved.

Paul McCartney also had an intuitive moment in a dream in 1965. He heard the tune of what later was recorded as the world famous hit song, ‘Yesterday,’ in a dream. It was a weird melody and McCartney first thought that he may have heard the tune or melody somewhere else earlier.

However, when he played it for people, no one could recall it. Convinced that it was his own mind which had given birth to the tune, The Beatles recorded the track Yesterday.

Indian Philosophy

Indian philosophical thought is shaped by the fact that intuition is proof that a soul is more connected to a higher power. Indians believe that when you embark on a spiritual journey, you are more able to develop your power of intuition. They believe that it is the Supreme Being who tells your Soul what is the best thing to do in any situation. There is an interesting story that Steve Jobs narrated about his visit to India in the 1970’s.

He later told his biographer that when he returned from India, “The main thing I have learnt is intuition, that the people in India are not just pure rational thinkers, that the great spiritual ones also have an intuition.”
