During the Buddhist New Year and other festivals, often the Metta Prayer is recited in Pali. But, now the English version is also recited by sitting in meditative pose.

Metta is associated compassion. amity and well being of all. Thus, Metta is a wish said as a prayer for all beings to be happy by being free from sufferings. It is better known a 'loving kindness prayer' that has reassuring phrases.

THE PRAYER

English prayers goes as follows

May I be filled with Loving-kindness

May I be happy

May I be well

May I be peaceful

May I be free

May all beings in my vicinity be happy. May they be well. May they be peaceful. May they be free.

May all beings in my town be happy. May they be well. May they be peaceful. May they be free.

May all beings in the Universe be happy. May all be well. May all be peaceful. May all be free.

May we all be happy

May we all be peaceful

May we all be well

May we all be free
