Yoga Guru Dr Surakshit Goswami: A Life Dedicated to Healing From the hallowed city of Haridwar, where the holy Ganga coming down from the Himalayas, washes the banks as an act of cultural ablution, a boy learnt yoga; actually he sought truth in the ancient Indian art of healing. Over the years it remained not just learning, but a process of merging into the world of yoga. Still young, the yogi earned recognition, and those afflicted and suffering, came from all over the world to seek his cure for their maladies. Today that boy from the ghats of Haridwar is an institution and revered by millions as the Yoga Guru; for those who have seen him closely he is Surakshitji, and to the outside word \u2013 Yogacharya Dr Surakshit Goswami. Some of the most influential and powerful people in India are among Dr Goswami\u2019s followers. He appears on television regularly and writes about yoga in some of the leading newspapers in the country. For him yoga is part of a spiritual quest and also a therapy, curing people of their strange maladies. Where Dr Goswami is different from some other highly visible yoga gurus is his humility. Steeped in the atmik tradition of Haridwar, he wears modesty both as his crown and armour. Documentaries have been made about him and his interviews telecast in many countries, but he seems to be completely oblivious about all that. Today Dr Goswami is one of the most sought-after healers offering answers to the sickness of the modern world. He has been spearheading a yoga and spiritual movement for the youths in India. He is the first yoga guru who has studied the subject as a discipline and obtained a Masters degree and PhD. In a career spanning about 30 years, he has conducted about 3,800 workshops and delivered lectures all over India. Dr. Goswami began a programme of therapy\u2013based yoga at a centre in Haridwar way back in 1991. Till date he has treated approximately 27,000 cases of backache, 19,500 cases of neck pain, 21,500 diabetes patients and 34,000 obesity cases and another 25,000 patients of stress. He has taught yoga and spirituality to members of the judiciary, senior administrators, scientists, business magnets, corporate honchos, public figures, celebrities, doctors, journalists and other professionals. Interestingly, among his patients are scientists from DRDO, senior officers of the armed forces, paramilitary personnel, CBI officers and senior officials of police forces in a few states. Founder of Yogmandiram Trust, Bhartiya Yog Shikshak Sangh, Love Your Life, a spiritual movement, and Shikshit Beti, Surakshit Beti, Dr. Goswami has taken an important initiative for the education of girls and their empowerment, healthcare and helping underprivileged girls get married. His unique initiative, Bhartiya Yog Shikshak Sangh, is aimed at bringing the yoga teachers under one banner, and the Yog Mandiram Trust is dedicated to social causes. He has organized yoga and health camps at orphanages, old\u2013age homes and blind schools. In addition to his yoga camps, Dr. Goswami treats the helpless and poor people. He has imparted yoga training to hundreds of volunteers from different areas under the Government of India schemes and as part of a UNICEF programme. Well versed in Sanskrit, he has translated the Bhagavad Gita in simple Hindi. The book, published by The Times of India, is intended to take the message of the great ancient text to the ordinary people. Dr. Goswami has authored five books \u2013 Patanjali Yog Nath Yog, Pran Oorja, Pran Oorja Yog, Yog for a Pain\u2013Free Back, and the Gita. His doctoral thesis, Patanjal Yog and Nath Yog, was selected by UGC. This research work has been recommended as a reference book in various universities across India. He made many DVDs and CDs on yoga and spirituality. Dr. Goswami stands out because of his pioneering initiative in presenting yoga and spirituality in an easy, ready\u2013to\u2013use format, suitable for this age and time. His yoga workshops at different corporate houses all over India have generated a new awareness and interest in those circles about the healing power of yoga. Dr Goswami also organizes various yoga workshops at schools, colleges and universities around the country to teach students how to cope with day\u2013to\u2013day stress\u2013related problems. He was hailed as a prodigy in yoga practice since a young age. He was bestowed the Yog Kumar award for the entire state of Uttar Pradesh at the age of 12. Dr. Goswami took formal training in yoga at the Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar. Here is a brief account of his educational background is: \u2022\tDiploma in Yoga, 1991 \u2022\tB.A. in Yoga, 1993 \u2022\tMasters in Yoga, 1995 (Gold Medalist) \u2022\tPhD in Yoga in 1999 Because of his excellence in yoga, the university appointed Dr. Goswami as a faculty member. He taught Practical Yoga, the Gita and Yogasutra at the same university for seven years. Since 2004, He has been associated with The Times Group, for spearheading a yoga and spiritual movement. He has travelled extensively around the world to showcase India\u2019s spiritual tradition and culture. His disciples are also spreading the message of yoga through their teachings. Among the television channels that have regularly telecast his programmes since 1995, are Doordarshan, Delhi, DD Kisan, Zee TV, Star TV, Zoom TV, ETV, CNEB, Zee Jagran, Pragya TV and so on. A Japanese TV channel made a documentary on his life and his easy yoga techniques. He developed Shantam Kriya, a 40-minute complete yoga package. Pran Oorja, a 30-minute therapeutic package and Sahaj Dhyan, a three-minute session of powerful meditation.
